If you’ve not heard the brand name ‘Skull Candy’ before, it’s a fair bet that you’re not in the first flush of youth. Skull Candy is an affordable headphone brand aimed at the youth market, and the brand has proved pretty popular with young and fashion-conscious consumers.
In order to cash in on the dash towards Bluetooth and true wireless earphones, Skull Candy has developed Indy, a pair of Apple AirPod lookalikes that the company hopes will appeal to younger consumers who perhaps can’t quite stretch to the price of a pair of AirPods, or who worry about losing an expensive pair of earphones.
The Skull Candy Indies are beautifully presented in a flip-top charging box which holds the Indy earbuds in a vertical position where they live until the user is ready to play with them. The charging box holds enough power to refresh the Indie earbuds up to three times before it needs recharging itself and the amount of charge is displayed on the front of the box by three white LEDs, one for each charging session. The earbuds are water resistant to IPX4 standard which means they’ll be fine for use in drizzle or if sweating heavily while exercising.
Each Indy earpiece features a touch control panel that can adjust volume, skip tracks, take calls and pause the music.
The earbuds can play for up to four hours on a single charge, which is a fairly respectable figure and should cover even the most vigorous of gym sessions or the most exhausting of commutes. When the listener is finished listening, the earbuds go back in their little box and they should be fully topped up ready for the next session within an hour or so. With the earbuds fully charged and the charging box totally replenished, the Indies offer a total listening time of 16 hours, but obviously that can only ever be in four-hour stretches.
The Indy earphones are supplied with a selection of differently sized silicone ear-tips that fit securely. Unfortunately, due to the precise fit of the earbuds in their charging cradle, it’s not possible to replace the supplied silicone ear-tips with memory foam versions as the lid of the charging box won’t close with the thicker ear-tips in place.
The charging case that houses the Skull Candy Indy holds up to 12 hours of power so the Indy earphones can be refreshed three times before the charging box needs to be recharged itself.
Pairing up the Skull Candy Indy is a piece of cake. Simply press and hold the control panel on each earbud for three seconds and then the Indy will appear on the Bluetooth selector of whatever smartphone or device you’re using to connect. You only have to do that once for each device and the subsequent connections will be faultless every time. As well as having the pairing controls built into each earpiece, the Indy have touch controls for volume, track selection, as well as play and pause. The earbuds also have a microphone built in so you can make and answer phone calls as with most Bluetooth earphones.
Once paired up I began listening to the Skull Candy Indy earphones. The sound is pretty good for the money with plenty of detail and a reasonable amount of bass. Ιf you’re a parent worried about your kids damaging their hearing by listening to music at too high volumes, the Indy are the perfect choice and I’ve no doubt that kids will soon get used to the lower volume levels thanks to the flexibility and adaptability of human hearing.
Verdict: These are stylish and good-sounding true wireless earbuds that will appeal to both parents and their kids. The design is cool – possibly even cooler than Apple AirPods – and should appeal to younger consumers who are already familiar with the Skull Candy brand. Τhe 16 hours of refresh time and four hours of playing time will be perfect for trips to school or for extended workouts in the gym. If you’d rather not entrust an expensive pair of Apple AirPods to your offspring, and if you want to protect their precious hearing, the Skull Candy Indy could be the ideal choice.
